Neo-Nazi Terror Plot Foiled: Man Charged Over Planned Mosque Attack in Scotland
Neo-Nazi terror plot foiled: Man charged over mosque attack

A major counter-terrorism operation in Scotland has prevented a suspected neo-Nazi plot to attack a mosque, leading to the arrest and charging of a 63-year-old man.

James Williamson, from the Ayrshire town of Saltcoats, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday, 30th April, facing serious terrorism charges. He is accused of preparing acts of terrorism and possessing information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

The Investigation and Charges

The arrest stems from a proactive investigation led by Counter Terrorism Policing Scotland. While specific details of the alleged plot remain undisclosed for operational and legal reasons, the charges are understood to be connected to a planned attack on a mosque.

Williamson made no plea during the brief private hearing and was remanded in custody by Sheriff Andrew Cubie. A further court appearance is scheduled for a later date.

A Pattern of Far-Right Threat

This case highlights the ongoing and significant threat posed by far-right extremism within the UK. It follows a similar incident in 2020, where another Scottish neo-Nazi, Adam Thomas, was jailed for planning a terrorist attack on a mosque. The continued vigilance of counter-terrorism units is crucial in disrupting such ideologies and preventing violence.

Police Scotland and Counter Terrorism Policing North West have been contacted for further comment on the investigation's specifics and the nature of the threat.
