Predator jailed for assaulting girl, 10, in Birmingham pub

Sean Sewell, 46, from Newtown, was sentenced to six years and five months in prison at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, July 10, after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl and indecent exposure. He will be on the sex offender register for life.

Rapid arrest after pub assault

On April 8, police responded to a report that a 10-year-old girl had been touched inappropriately by a man at a pub in Birmingham city centre. Officers arrived quickly and located Sewell nearby within approximately 20 minutes. He was arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

Detective Constable Lewis Harris of West Midlands Police said: "We're pleased to see Sewell has been jailed for his crimes, where he targeted a woman and a young girl. We have remained in contact with both and they have been kept up to date throughout the investigation as we worked to bring Sewell to justice."

Linked to earlier bus incident

During the investigation, detectives from the Public Protection Unit connected Sewell to a separate incident on a bus in Birmingham city centre in October 2023. A woman reported that a man had exposed himself to her. Sewell was subsequently charged with exposure in addition to the child sexual assault.

Temporary Detective Constable Huckerby added: "Ultimately a quick response from officers on the ground, and a thorough subsequent investigation, has led to Sewell being brought before the courts. We're working hard across Birmingham and the West Midlands to tackle all forms of violence against women and girls. We take each report incredibly seriously."

Sentence and registration

Sewell pleaded guilty to both charges and received a total sentence of six years and five months imprisonment. He will be required to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring by authorities.

West Midlands Police reiterated their commitment to addressing violence against women and girls, emphasizing the importance of swift police action and thorough investigations in bringing offenders to justice.
