Teen Gang Rape Victim Dies After Botched Abortion in Pakistan
Teen Dies After Botched Abortion Following Gang Rape in Pakistan

A tragic case in Pakistan has sparked national outrage after an 18-year-old housemaid died from complications arising from a forced illegal abortion following repeated gang rapes. The teenager, identified only as Ayesha, suffered a year-long ordeal of sexual abuse at the hands of her employer's son and a driver in Lahore.

Year of Abuse and Forced Pregnancy

According to court records, Ayesha worked as a housemaid for a wealthy family to support her family. Inside the employer's home, she was repeatedly raped by the boss's son and the family driver. In November last year, after months of abuse, she discovered she was pregnant. Instead of receiving support, her employers forced her to terminate the pregnancy illegally at a private clinic to protect the family's reputation.

Health Deterioration and Death

After the abortion, Ayesha fell severely ill and was hospitalized multiple times. Her condition worsened, and she eventually died on May 26. Before her death, she gave a statement to police detailing the abuse. A video she recorded from her hospital bed went viral on social media, bringing the case to light.

According to court documents, Ayesha was forced to take abortion pills that made her extremely ill. She returned to her hometown of Faisalabad to recover, but her health declined further. When her parents took her to a local clinic, doctors confirmed she was still five months pregnant. Her employers then ordered her back to Lahore, where she was threatened and taken for an operation. Doctors discovered the unborn baby was already dead. Ayesha never recovered from the complications.

Investigation and Public Outcry

The two alleged rapists and the employer are being investigated for gang rape and murder. The driver has been remanded in custody, while the employer and his son have been granted bail. Police are also investigating the staff at the private clinic where the abortion was performed.

Ayesha's father told BBC Urdu: 'When she came to Faisalabad and her health deteriorated, the doctor told us she was pregnant. Hearing this, my legs trembled; it felt like the sky was about to fall on me.'

Since the video went viral, many Pakistanis have demanded justice. One social media user said: 'A domestic worker named Ayesha, just 18-19 years old, is gone. Not from illness. Not from accident. From systematic rape, forced abortion, torture, and death threats carried out by her own employer. Ayesha deserved protection. She deserved justice. She deserved to LIVE.'

Wider Context of Sexual Violence in Pakistan

Sexual violence against women is common in Pakistan but often goes unreported due to stigma. Victims face victim-blaming, social ostracization, and pressure to remain silent to protect family honor. Several provinces have enacted laws to protect women, including the Punjab Protection of Women against Violence Act and domestic violence prevention acts in Sindh and Balochistan.
