Newcastle Man Jailed 14 Years for Knifepoint Gold Raid

Mohammed Ruman Khan, 22, from Newcastle, has been sentenced to 13 years and 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to an aggravated burglary in Birmingham and several other offences in northern England. The incident took place in April when Khan knocked on the front door of a property in Alum Rock, forced his way inside, and brandished a knife at the occupants.

According to West Midlands Police, a woman sustained injuries during a struggle as Khan stole gold, clothing, and perfume. Two of the woman's relatives attempted to retrieve the stolen items but were threatened with the weapon as Khan fled. The relatives managed to photograph Khan during the getaway, which proved crucial to the police investigation.

Investigation and Arrest

Khan was tracked down to Northumbria, where officers arrested him. He was charged with aggravated burglary and pleaded guilty to that offence along with several others committed in the north of England. At Newcastle Crown Court on Friday, July 10, he received a total sentence of 13 years and 10 months, including 7 years and 6 months for the Birmingham burglary.

Police Statement

Detective Sergeant Adam Charlesworth, from the Birmingham Neighbourhood Crime Team, said: "We are pleased with the sentence given to Khan, clearly a dangerous offender who wasn't afraid to use violence to steal for his own personal gain. The people he stole from in Birmingham were brave in confronting him and trying to stop the theft, and their quick thinking in getting a photo helped us bring him to justice. We are also grateful to our colleagues in Northumbria for their help with this investigation, and their cooperation and professionalism in helping us bring Khan to justice, as they too were investigating him."

Impact on Victims

The family targeted in the raid were left traumatised by the incident, with one woman suffering physical injuries during the struggle. The stolen gold, clothing, and perfume represented a significant financial loss, though the value has not been disclosed. The bravery of the relatives in confronting Khan and securing photographic evidence was commended by police.
