Man charged after human remains found in St Helens

A 65-year-old man has been formally charged after police made a grim discovery of human remains inside a flat in St Helens, Merseyside. The investigation has also led to the arrest of a second local man.

Police Discover Human Remains

Merseyside Police officers were called to a property in Gerards Court at 11.30pm on Thursday, 8 January 2026, following a report concerning a person's safety. Upon entering the flat, they made the disturbing discovery of human remains. The identity of the deceased person has not yet been formally established.

The scene was swiftly secured, with a significant police presence remaining throughout Friday and Saturday. Forensic officers in white suits were seen moving between the flat and their vehicles, while a mobile police station and a white forensic tent were erected in the car park at the rear of the building.

Charges and Further Arrest

At the scene, police arrested George Gordon, aged 65. He has since been charged with two serious offences:

  • Preventing the lawful and decent burial of a dead body.
  • Obstructing a coroner in the execution of their duty.

Gordon has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Monday, 12 January.

In a further development, a 58-year-old man from St Helens has also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He remains in police custody for questioning.

Ongoing Investigation

The police investigation continues to focus on the block of flats in Gerards Court. Officers are conducting extensive enquiries as they work to piece together the circumstances leading to the discovery.
