Jahfari Moore, 25, accused of murdering Carl Ennis at a Stockbridge Village chip shop, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on July 17 via video link from Ashworth High Security Hospital and did not enter a plea. Prosecutor Martina Snowden stated that a doctor's report suggested Moore was currently not fit to plead but that further treatment could change this.
Alleged Assault at The Village Chippy
The incident occurred at The Village Chippy off Leach Croft on April 17 at around 7:30pm. Carl Ennis, 54, known as Scully, suffered a serious head injury from what Snowden described as a single, forceful punch. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and died four days later on April 21.
Staff and a regular customer tended to Ennis after the assault, and he left with his takeaway before the severity of his injuries became apparent. The North West Ambulance Service reported the incident to Merseyside Police the following day.
Arrest and Charges
A 25-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding on April 20. After Ennis died, the suspect was further arrested on suspicion of murder. Moore, of Marled Hey in Stockbridge Village, was subsequently charged.
At the hearing, Snowden noted that a doctor's report indicated Moore was not fit to plead but that with treatment, this could change. Judge Neil Flewitt KC ordered a further medical assessment, with a report due by September 5. A case management hearing is set for September 14, and a trial date remains for October 19.
Tributes to Carl Ennis
Following his death, loved ones paid tribute to Ennis. Jackie Jones wrote on Facebook: "We shared so many happy and adventurous times growing up. You were one of the truest people I ever had the privilege to be around. You will be sadly missed. Forever in all our hearts." Others described him as a "lovely fella" and a "familiar face" in the neighbourhood. One resident said: "He'd always shout hello every time he saw me. He was a lovely lad." Floral tributes, including a wreath reading "RIP Scully", were left outside the chip shop.
