Cameron Thomas, the Liberal Democrat MP for Tewkesbury, has been suspended from the party whip and membership following a police investigation. The MP, who has served since 2024, is understood to have been arrested by Gloucestershire police on Wednesday night.
Thomas won the Tewkesbury seat from the Conservatives in the 2024 general election with a majority of over 6,000. Prior to his political career, he served as a military police officer in the RAF for 23 years, with tours in Iraq, the Falkland Islands, and the United States.
Details surrounding his arrest have not been released. On Wednesday evening, a post appeared on Thomas's Facebook page showing him in the House of Commons wearing an England football shirt with the slogan 'Extra Time For Dads,' advocating for extended paternity leave. Another message criticized Reform UK.
Thomas was in Gloucestershire over the weekend, attending a fair in Bishop's Cleve near Cheltenham, where he spoke with locals and a Liberal Democrat councillor. He reportedly remained in the area to watch England's opening World Cup match on Wednesday.
Political and Military Background
Thomas spent 23 years in the RAF, working in telecommunications and information technology, before becoming a drill instructor and later commissioning as a military police officer. Since his election, he has focused on defence and foreign policy, advocating for closer collaboration with NATO and EU partners and rebuilding the UK's defence-industrial base.
Party Response
A Liberal Democrat spokesperson stated: 'Cameron Thomas MP has had the party whip suspended pending the outcome of a police investigation. We are unable to comment further while the police investigation is ongoing.' His party membership has also been suspended.
Thomas lives in his constituency, where his daughter attends school. His office and Gloucestershire police have been contacted for comment.
