Dr. Chrishelle Hemphill, a 48-year-old dentist in Texas, has been arrested and charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony, following the death of 4-year-old Aithana Rodríguez-Arriaga during a routine dental procedure. The Fort Worth Police Department announced the charges on July 16, 2026, more than three months after the incident occurred on April 1, 2026.
Fatal Procedure at Cuddle Kids Dental Care
Aithana underwent a minor procedure at Cuddle Kids Dental Care, located in the 5300 block of Sycamore School Rd., to address being tongue-tied—a common condition where the lingual frenulum restricts tongue movement. However, during the procedure, the child became unresponsive. She was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
An autopsy by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner determined the cause of death as meperidine (Demerol) toxicity, with 793 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) found in the child's system. Meperidine is an opioid used as a preoperative medication. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recommended dosage for an adult is 200 to 500 ng/mL, and for children, it is 0.5 mg/lb to 0.8 mg/lb of the adult dose. The warrant states that the level in Aithana's system could have proven toxic and potentially lethal even for an adult.
Allegations of Neglect
Detective J. Spragins of the Fort Worth Police Department stated, “Throughout this investigation, I have learned from Hemphill’s own statements, her staff’s statements, and from medical professionals that there was evident neglect on Hemphill’s part that led to Aithana’s death.” The arrest warrant affidavit alleges that Hemphill administered meperidine along with other sedatives and nitrous oxide gas to the child before the procedure and failed to monitor her adequately or provide emergency treatment when she became unresponsive.
Legal Proceedings and Bond
Hemphill was arrested on Tuesday and released after posting a $10,000 bond. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. The investigation was conducted by the Fort Worth Police Department's Crimes Against Children Unit.
Family's Grief
The child's mother created a GoFundMe page in April, describing Aithana as “a beautiful 4-year-old girl, filled with life and kindness.” The page added, “Her presence always lit up a room, and she brought so much joy to everyone around her. Tragically, Aithana passed away after a small procedure at the dentist, and our family is heartbroken by her sudden loss. She was sweet, loving, and touched the lives of all who knew her.”
