Teddy Picton, 20, has been sentenced for causing death by dangerous driving after hitting cyclist Brad Craven, 72, on Dunleavy Drive, Grangetown, Cardiff, on May 17. Mr Craven had recently lost his wife Janet in April and was planning her funeral at the time of the crash.
Crash Details
Mr Craven was cycling with his brother Philip when he was struck by a Fiat 500 driven by Picton. The court heard Picton had failed his driving test weeks earlier and told police he had swapped seats with the passenger because she was intoxicated. Witnesses described the aftermath as horrific, with Mr Craven gasping for breath on the ground. He was taken to the University Hospital of Wales but never regained consciousness, dying on June 20.
Victim Impact Statements
Philip Craven, who has since died, provided a victim impact statement read in court. His partner Elin Healey said: 'His death is connected to the traumatic loss of his brother.' Brad's niece Lucy Edwards stated: 'The loss of Brad and Janet has changed our family forever. Grief continues to affect us all.'
Picton pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court. The case highlights the dangers of unlicensed driving and the devastating consequences for families.
