The family of Stephen Ogilvie, the victim of a stabbing in north Belfast, has confirmed that he is out of an induced coma but may lose the sight in his right eye. Mr Ogilvie lost his left eye and suffered deep cuts to his head, face, and back during the attack at Kinnaird Avenue last week.
Court Appearance
Hadi Alodid, 30, appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder. He is next due to appear via videolink on July 8.
Family Statement
On Wednesday, Mr Ogilvie’s family expressed relief at his awakening but noted significant challenges ahead, including potential loss of sight in his right eye. They thanked the public for their kindness and generosity, stating they were humbled by the support from many who had never met them.
Background of the Accused
Sudanese national Alodid entered Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland by bus in February 2023, having flown to Dublin from Paris. He claimed asylum upon arrival and was granted leave to remain in the UK until 2028.
Public Reaction
A graphic video of the stabbing went viral, with figures including tech billionaire Elon Musk and far-right activist Tommy Robinson calling for public protests. Anti-immigration disorder subsequently broke out, resulting in homes, cars, and a bus being set on fire, and individuals targeted based on race. To date, 35 arrests have been made and 23 people charged.
