A 25-year-old woman from Gwent has been handed a prison sentence for a shocking campaign of violence and theft that left multiple victims traumatised.
Megan Breen, of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court after admitting to a string of offences, including two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) and two counts of theft. The court heard a harrowing account of her crimes, which revealed a pattern of calculated aggression.
A Night Out Turns Violent
The most disturbing incident occurred after Breen met a woman on a night out in Cwmbran on October 8, 2023. After socialising together, Breen accompanied the victim back to her home. Once there, Breen's demeanour changed dramatically.
She launched a vicious, unprovoked attack on the woman, punching her repeatedly in the face. The court was told the assault was so forceful that the victim was left with significant bruising and swelling, a visible testament to the brutality of the attack.
A Spree of Theft and Deception
Breen's criminal activity was not limited to violence. In a separate incident on July 18, 2023, she stole a purse from a woman at a pub in Pontypool. But her crimes didn't end there.
Just two days later, on July 20, she brazenly used the bank cards taken from that purse to go on a spending spree, fraudulently obtaining goods for her own benefit. Furthermore, Breen admitted to stealing alcohol from a store in Cwmbran on September 23, 2023, adding theft to her list of convictions.
Justice Served at Cardiff Crown Court
Appearing before the court, Breen was sentenced to a total of 12 months in prison. The presiding judge condemned her actions, highlighting the severe impact such violence and deception have on victims and the wider community.
Following the sentencing, a representative for Gwent Police welcomed the outcome. They stated: "We welcome the sentence given to Breen at Cardiff Crown Court. We hope this provides some reassurance to the victims and the wider public. Violence of any nature is unacceptable, and we will continue to investigate and bring those responsible to justice."
Breen is now serving her time at HMP Prescoed, a men's open prison in Usk that also has facilities for female inmates.
