Woman in Her 70s Dies in Wolverhampton Dog Attack, Third UK Fatality in Days
A woman in her 70s has tragically died after being mauled by two dogs at a house in Wolverhampton, becoming the third fatality from a dog attack in the United Kingdom within a matter of days. Emergency crews were dispatched to Willis Pearson Avenue in the Bilston area of the city following reports of the incident involving the elderly victim.
Emergency Response and Fatal Outcome
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor, and a critical care paramedic attended the scene at approximately 11:30 PM on Wednesday. Upon arrival, they found two patients: the elderly woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a man with injuries not believed to be serious, who was taken to New Cross Hospital for further assessment.
The dogs involved in the attack, which are not believed to be a banned breed, were later destroyed after they continued to exhibit aggressive behavior towards emergency services. Police have stated that the investigation is in its early stages as they work to understand the exact circumstances of the attack.
Arrest and Community Reaction
A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog that was dangerously out of control and caused injury resulting in death. He sustained hand injuries during the incident and was conveyed to the hospital for treatment. The scene remains in place as officers carry out further inquiries into the two dogs.
Neighbors described a somber atmosphere on the quiet residential street, with front windows of the property boarded up and a woman seen leaving flowers at the home. "She couldn't have fended him off as she was very weak, they were big dogs," said neighbor Sam Wright, 64. Another neighbor recounted an earlier encounter with the dogs, stating they had to quickly exit the property due to their size and aggressive demeanor.
Context of Recent Dog Attacks in the UK
This incident follows two other fatal dog attacks that occurred last week across the UK:
- On April 9, armed police shot a dog in Redcar, North Yorkshire, after it attacked and killed a three-month-old girl.
- On April 10, 19-year-old Jamie-Lea Biscoe was found with serious injuries and subsequently died after being attacked by a dog in Leaden Roding, Essex.
These events have raised concerns about dog safety and control measures in residential areas, prompting ongoing police investigations and community vigilance. The West Midlands Police spokesperson emphasized that further enquiries are being conducted to determine the full details of the Wolverhampton attack.
