Football Legend Joe Cole Backs Campaign to Boost Struggling Pubs with World Cup TV Upgrades
Former England international Joe Cole has thrown his support behind a major campaign aimed at revitalising Britain's struggling pubs in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The initiative, spearheaded by Samsung, focuses on providing crucial television and audio upgrades to help landlords capitalise on the upcoming tournament.
Financial Lifeline for Pubs Amid Rising Costs
With many pubs facing severe financial pressures due to escalating operational costs, major sporting events like the World Cup represent a vital revenue stream. New research commissioned by Samsung reveals that an overwhelming 87% of pub landlords consider football tournaments essential for boosting their income. On average, these events generate approximately £11,000 in additional revenue per pub, contributing an estimated £495 million to the UK pub industry during tournament periods.
The study underscores the critical role of high-quality viewing technology in attracting customers. A significant 60% of football fans admit that a venue's television setup directly influences their choice of pub when watching matches. Furthermore, 97% of Britons stated they would leave a pub during a game if the viewing quality is subpar, highlighting the commercial risk for establishments with outdated equipment.
Community and Cultural Significance of Pub Football
Football remains deeply embedded in British culture, with 40% of Britons preferring to watch major tournaments at their local pub. An impressive 86% agree that watching matches together fosters a strong sense of community and creates shared, memorable experiences. For fans, the technical quality of a venue is paramount, with 39% prioritising screen and audio setup over atmosphere (32%) or food options (30%) when selecting where to watch sports.
Despite recognising the importance of technology, many landlords face financial barriers. One-third express a desire to invest in new televisions and sound systems but lack the necessary funds, potentially missing out on valuable World Cup business.
Samsung's 'Raise the Bar' Campaign Details
In response to these challenges, Joe Cole has endorsed Samsung's 'Raise the Bar' campaign, which aims to assist eleven pubs across the nation with substantial technology upgrades. The initiative includes:
- Ten selected venues receiving a brand-new Samsung TV valued at £3,000 each, alongside local marketing support to drive footfall.
- One grand prize winner securing a comprehensive tech upgrade and pub makeover worth over £13,000, including dedicated media assistance.
Zeena Hill, Marketing Director for Home Entertainment and Appliances at Samsung UK, emphasised the campaign's community focus: "Local pubs play a vital role in uniting communities, especially during major sporting moments. We're proud to support them with technology upgrades to enhance the matchday experience for customers."
Voting Process and Timeline
The public nomination phase opened on Friday, April 17, and will continue until Wednesday, May 20. A shortlist of eleven finalists will be announced on Thursday, April 30, after which fans can vote for their preferred pub to receive the full tech makeover. The winners will be revealed by Thursday, May 21.
Joe Cole reflected on the initiative's significance: "Local pubs are at the heart of our communities, especially for football. There's nothing like watching a big game surrounded by mates, and a quality TV setup keeps everyone engaged. This campaign gives pubs the tools to create unforgettable matchday memories."
With 74% of Britons believing their local pub needs a better television in time for the summer of football, the 'Raise the Bar' campaign offers a timely opportunity for venues to upgrade their technology and ensure fans enjoy the ultimate viewing experience during the 2026 World Cup.
