Members of the US Park Police conducted a thorough search for evidence at the location in southeast Washington DC where one of their officers was shot on the evening of March 24. The incident has been described by police leadership as a deliberate ambush targeting law enforcement personnel.
Officer Targeted in Unmarked Vehicle
According to Park Police Chief Scott Brecht, the unidentified officer was "ambushed" by two assailants who fired upon his unmarked police vehicle as he drove through the neighborhood. The officer was actively engaged in a Park Police investigation at the time of the attack, though specific details about that investigation remain undisclosed to protect operational integrity.
"We have jurisdiction in all of Washington DC," Chief Brecht emphasized during a press briefing, underscoring the broad authority of the Park Police force within the nation's capital.
Serious But Stable Condition
The veteran officer sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was airlifted by US Park Police helicopter to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment. Vito Maggiolo, public information officer for the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Service Department, confirmed the emergency call was received at approximately 7:30 PM.
A law enforcement official speaking anonymously revealed the officer is in serious but stable condition, with the US Park Police subsequently confirming in an official statement that the injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an extensive manhunt for the two suspects responsible for the shooting. The incident occurred in Washington DC's southeast quadrant, close to the Maryland border, an area now under increased police scrutiny.
Washington DC's Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll stated unequivocally that the officer was deliberately targeted. "There's no reason that anybody, a police officer or not a police officer, should be shot just for being out here driving through the neighborhood," Carroll declared. "We believe potentially they did know he was a police officer, but that'll all be part of the ongoing investigation as relates to the actual shooting incident."
Federal Support Mobilized
Multiple federal agencies have joined the investigation. US Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed in a social media post that she had been briefed on the shooting after speaking with both Chief Carroll and Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser.
FBI Director Kash Patel issued his own statement expressing prayers for the wounded officer while announcing the Bureau's active involvement. "The FBI is actively supporting the investigation alongside our law enforcement partners and will bring those responsible to justice," Patel affirmed.
