Arrests Rise by 74% as Border Security Command Targets Smuggling Gangs

New data from the UK Border Security Commander reveals that arrests related to small boat smuggling gangs have increased by 74% in the 12 months to March 31 compared to the previous year. The Home Office estimates at least 1,900 arrests were made during this period. Border security and asylum minister Alex Norris told The Mirror that the figures demonstrate the government's intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks responsible for dangerous Channel crossings.

Record Disruptions in Early 2024

In the first three months of 2024, authorities recorded 1,138 disruptions of organised immigration crime organisations, a dramatic rise from just 311 in the same period in 2023 under then-Home Secretary Suella Braverman. This represents a more than threefold increase in operations targeting smugglers.

Norris stated: "This government is cracking down on the ruthless gangs behind organised immigration crime, driving a major 74% surge in arrests and putting more criminals behind bars where they belong. These figures send a clear message to those who profit from undermining our border security. We are coming after you and will not stop until your networks are dismantled."

Border Security Command and Investment

After Labour came to power in 2024, it established a new Border Security Command specifically tasked with targeting criminals behind small boat crossings. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the command has had a significant impact. In a statement to Parliament, she noted that an extra £100 million was invested into the system last year, with the government committing an additional £280 million per year by 2028.

Mahmood commented: "The public rightly expect us to control who and what enter this country. It is one of the most fundamental duties of the state and remains a top priority for me and the government I serve in. This report sets out significant achievements which amount to a major upscaling of the UK’s Border Security System. It has been a strong start – but further work is needed. We know that illegal migration remains one of the defining issues of our time."

Drop in Small Boat Arrivals and International Cooperation

More than 12,000 people have arrived in the UK via small boats so far in 2024, a 44% decrease compared to the same period last year. In April 2024, the UK and France agreed to deploy hundreds more police officers to patrol northern French beaches to prevent crossings. The agreement includes the use of millions of pounds worth of drones and helicopters to surveil and disrupt smugglers packing dangerous vessels. It also mandates a 40% surge in officers assigned to stop small boats in France, with the UK warning that funding will cease without results.

The deal involves a £500 million investment to boost enforcement action, with an additional £160 million available if measures prove successful. Norris added: "Since the election, we have made it harder for people-smuggling gangs to operate. With record disruptions, increased arrests and stronger international partnerships targeting criminal networks, we are bearing down on small boat crossings."
