Uber Eats Driver Fatally Attacked During Chicago Delivery

A 28-year-old Uber Eats driver was killed in the early hours of Monday morning after confronting individuals attempting to steal his vehicle. Daniel Figueroa was making a food delivery to Loretto Hospital on Chicago's West Side when the violent encounter occurred.

Violent Confrontation During Routine Delivery

According to police reports and surveillance footage, Figueroa had just completed a delivery to a doctor at the hospital around 2 a.m. and was returning to his parked van when three individuals approached the vehicle. As Figueroa opened the driver's door, the suspects reportedly dragged him approximately half a block before fleeing the scene.

The doctor who had ordered the food ventured outside to collect the meal only to discover Figueroa lying injured on the street. Emergency services transported the delivery driver to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from injuries to his head and body.

Family Devastated by Senseless Violence

Figueroa's father, Carlos Figueroa, expressed profound grief over his son's death. "He was my youngest son, and now I have to bury him because someone decided to take his life," he told local media. "He was on his way home. This was going to be his last stop... I hope my son didn't suffer. He didn't deserve this."

The victim worked both as an Uber Eats delivery driver and an Amazon delivery driver to support his family. He was the primary provider for his girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero, and her young son, whom he treated as his own child.

"His passing has left not only an emotional void, but also a sudden financial burden that I never expected to face," Guerrero wrote on a fundraising page established to help cover expenses.

Investigation Underway with One Person Detained

Chicago Police have classified the incident as a homicide investigation. Sources indicate that surveillance footage shows two women and one man entering Figueroa's van moments before the fatal confrontation. As of Monday afternoon, authorities had taken one woman into custody for questioning, though no formal charges have been filed.

"We're incredibly saddened by this tragic loss, and our thoughts are with their family and loved ones as they navigate this unimaginably difficult time," Uber stated in response to the incident. "We've reached out to police and will assist them however we can."

Loretto Hospital issued a statement expressing condolences to Figueroa's family while emphasizing their commitment to community safety during this difficult period.

Figueroa's father expressed hope that justice would be served. "This way, there can be some kind of justice for my son, and he didn't die in vain," Carlos Figueroa said.
