Two Fatalities in Shooting Near Players Championship Golf Course
Two individuals were killed in a fatal shooting near The Players Championship golf course in Florida on Friday night, leading to an extensive police search for the suspect. The incident occurred in the parking lot of a Walgreens drug store, approximately one mile from the TPC Sawgrass course hosting the prestigious PGA Tour event.
Suspect Identified as Christian Barrios
St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick identified the suspect as Christian Barrios, who turned 32 on Saturday. According to authorities, Barrios shot the two victims multiple times around 10:30 p.m. on Friday in what is described as a domestic violence situation. Both victims were transported to a hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
Hardwick revealed that Barrios has a long criminal history and was acquainted with the victims. Following the shooting, canine units pursued Barrios onto the TPC Sawgrass property, where he reportedly picked up a PGA Tour radio before discarding it.
Manhunt and Tournament Delays
The suspect then stole a black BMW, leading to a pursuit by Nassau County authorities in northeastern Florida. The chase ended with the vehicle crashing into the woods, after which Barrios fled on foot and remains at large. In response to the incident, The Players Championship delayed opening its gates for the third round until 9 a.m. on Saturday, citing operational considerations.
While the first round began at 8:15 a.m. without delay, hospitality areas were postponed until 11 a.m. The shooting occurred just hours after the conclusion of the tournament's second round, adding to the disruption of the weekend's events.
Tournament Standings Amidst Tragedy
Despite the chaos, Sweden's Ludvig Aberg maintained a two-shot lead heading into the third round, having shot a nine under par 63 on Friday to reach 12 under par overall. He leads America's Xander Schauffele, with Cameron Young and Justin Thomas also in contention as the tournament continues through Sunday.
Authorities continue their search for Barrios, urging the public to remain vigilant as the investigation unfolds. The incident has cast a shadow over the golfing event, highlighting concerns about safety and domestic violence in the community.
