Three individuals from south Wales have been charged following the largest seizure of cannabis in UK history at Southampton docks. The cargo was intercepted after Canadian authorities flagged a shipment destined for the UK.
Massive Discovery
On May 6, Border Force officers discovered 12 tonnes of cannabis inside two shipping containers. The drugs were packed in 1,200 cardboard boxes containing vacuum-sealed bags, with an estimated street value of £139 million.
Arrests and Charges
On Tuesday, officers from South Wales Police, Gwent Police, and the Southwest Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) executed warrants in Merthyr Tydfil, Ebbw Vale, and Abertillery. The three suspects charged are:
- Daniel Gould-Lewis, 37, from Caerphilly
- Gavin Davies, 45, from Ebbw Vale
- Heidi Phillips, 36, from Merthyr Tydfil
All three face charges of being knowingly concerned in the importation of cannabis, conspiracy to supply cannabis, money laundering, and importation of a prohibited weapon (incapacitant spray). Gould-Lewis faces additional charges for possession with intent to supply heroin and crack cocaine.
Next Steps
The suspects have been remanded in custody and are set to appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
