Six Texas Teenagers Arrested for Alleged Filmed Attack on Disabled Cyclist
Six teenagers have been taken into custody in Texas following accusations that they filmed themselves bullying and violently assaulting a disabled man. The incident, which occurred on Easter in Wharton, near Houston, has led to charges of aggravated robbery and engaging in organized criminal activity against the juveniles, aged between 12 and 14.
Details of the Assault and Robbery
According to the victim, 44-year-old Darrell Norman Williams, he was riding his bicycle when the group of six juveniles approached and attacked him. Williams told ABC 13 that the assailants threw bottles and rocks at him before knocking him off his bike. The attack escalated as the teenagers began kicking and punching Williams while recording the abuse on video.
Williams' caretaker, Diondre Brown, provided further harrowing details, stating that during the assault, Williams' pants were ripped off and he was repeatedly kicked in the gut and head. Brown also reported that the perpetrators stole Williams' bicycle and shoes, leaving the disabled man vulnerable and injured.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Days after the incident, the Wharton Police Department received video evidence of the assault and robbery, prompting a swift investigation. All six minors were subsequently arrested. Due to their ages, their identities have not been released to the public.
In a statement, the Wharton Police Department emphasized its commitment to justice, stating, "The Wharton Police Department takes all criminal incidents, especially senseless acts of this nature, very seriously and remains committed to pursuing justice in this case." Police confirmed that Williams sustained visible but non-life-threatening injuries from the attack.
Legal Proceedings and Custody Arrangements
Following their arrest, four of the juveniles have been transported to a juvenile detention center, while the remaining two have been released to their parents. The charges of aggravated robbery and engaging in organized criminal activity reflect the severity of the alleged crimes, which involved both physical violence and theft.
Williams expressed his shock and dismay over the unprovoked attack, telling ABC 13, "I do nothing to them, I said nothing to them." Brown echoed these sentiments, condemning the teenagers' actions by saying, "They treated him like a piece of trash."
