Mixed martial arts superstar Conor McGregor has resolved his protracted multi-million-pound legal battle with former friend and training partner Artem Lobov. The settlement was confirmed in Dublin's High Court on Wednesday, just as the case was scheduled to commence.
Details of the Whiskey Dispute
Lobov initiated legal proceedings against McGregor, alleging that the two had a handshake agreement in 2017. According to Lobov's claim, McGregor promised him five percent of the proceeds from the sale of Proper No Twelve Irish whiskey in recognition of his role in conceiving the brand.
The Proper No Twelve brand proved to be an enormous commercial triumph for McGregor. In 2021, the whiskey business was sold to Proximo Spirits for a staggering £442 million. McGregor reportedly earned approximately £73 million from that transaction alone.
Conflicting Accounts and Settlement
Lobov contended that he was unfairly excluded from the profits, asserting that the handshake agreement occurred in a gym with three witnesses present. McGregor acknowledged offering Lobov just over £700,000 for his contributions but maintained there was never any formal agreement regarding a share of the sale proceeds.
Lobov rejected that offer and pursued legal action. His legal representative, Andrew Walker, informed the High Court that the matter had been settled. Lobov was photographed outside the courthouse giving a thumbs-up gesture, expressing satisfaction with the outcome.
McGregor was not present in court, but his counsel, Mark Lynam, read a statement on his behalf. McGregor stated he was pleased with the resolution and could now concentrate fully on training for a fight scheduled this summer. He also thanked Lobov for his efforts in developing the whiskey business.
Focus Shifts to UFC Comeback
The settlement removes a significant distraction for McGregor as speculation intensifies regarding his return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. McGregor has not competed in the octagon since his defeat to Dustin Poirier in 2021, yet he remains the sport's premier pay-per-view attraction.
There has been considerable conjecture that McGregor might feature on the highly anticipated UFC Freedom 250 card, set to take place at the White House on June 14. A temporary 4,500-seat arena is being constructed specifically for this unique event.
Training and Speculation
McGregor has been actively sharing training footage on social media, indicating rigorous preparation for a potential comeback. He previously discussed fighting on the White House card, even posting on social media about demanding substantial financial compensation and special visas for associates.
However, UFC President Dana White provided a characteristically cryptic update when questioned about McGregor's return, offering only a brief, non-committal response. Fans have grown accustomed to numerous false starts and await an official announcement from the promotion before believing in a confirmed comeback.
The specific terms of the legal settlement between McGregor and Lobov remain confidential. Nevertheless, the resolution allows both parties to move forward, with McGregor now ostensibly free to pursue his fighting career without the looming court case.
