Teenager Arrested on Suspicion of Murder Following Tragic Discovery in Plymouth Marina
A 19-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the discovery of a man's body in the waters of Plymouth's Millbay Marina. The victim is believed to be Drew Perham, aged 24, who was reported missing after failing to return home from a night out in the city.
Police Launch Extensive Investigation
Devon and Cornwall Police initiated a significant operation following the report of Mr. Perham's disappearance on Saturday, January 24th. Officers conducted thorough searches throughout the night, which led to the establishment of a cordon on Soap Street, adjacent to Millbay Marina. The investigation intensified when a body was recovered from the water at the marina on Sunday afternoon, January 25th.
Detective Superintendent James Dowler addressed the public, stating: "This investigation has been very fast paced, and the community will be aware of the significant policing presence that has been in the Millbay area as our enquiries have progressed throughout the day. This will continue in the coming days."
Family's Heartbreaking Statement
The family of Drew Perham have been informed of the development and are receiving support from specially trained officers. In a poignant statement, they expressed their profound grief: "We have unfortunately received the most horrendous news, our beautiful and wonderful Drew Perham has cruelly been taken from us. We appreciate all the support and messages, but right now we need the time to navigate this together."
While formal identification procedures are still pending, authorities have confirmed that the family has been notified of the tragic discovery.
Arrest and Police Appeal
The 19-year-old suspect was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder earlier on Sunday. Following the recovery of the body, he was subsequently further arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody at the time of reporting.
Detective Superintendent Dowler made a direct appeal to the public: "I would like to ask people to avoid speculating about this case – we are in the early stages of our investigation to establish the full circumstances and online speculation in particular, is not helpful."
Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the Millbay area between 1am and 4am on Saturday, January 24th. Information can be reported by calling 101 or through the police website, quoting reference number 50260019981.
Community Impact and Ongoing Enquiries
The incident has understandably sent shockwaves through the Plymouth community. Photographs from the scene at approximately 1pm on Sunday showed a substantial police presence, including officers from the diving and marine unit. The police operation extended to the King Point Marina vicinity as part of their comprehensive enquiries.
Detective Superintendent Dowler concluded his statement by emphasizing: "Formal identification is yet to take place, however, all of our thoughts are with Drew's family and friends at this unbelievably difficult time."
The investigation continues as authorities work diligently to piece together the events leading to this tragic outcome.
