Sydney Family's Nightmare: 85-Year-Old Man Kidnapped in Case of Mistaken Identity
The family of Chris Baghsarian, an 85-year-old man who was kidnapped from his Sydney home last week, have spoken out about their harrowing ordeal, describing it as a surreal nightmare they never imagined possible. Baghsarian was taken from his North Ryde residence on Friday morning, allegedly by underworld figures, in what police have confirmed was a case of mistaken identity.
Family Statement: 'Living Through a Nightmare'
In a statement released through New South Wales police on Tuesday evening, Baghsarian's relatives expressed their profound distress. "Our family is living through a nightmare we never thought possible," they said. "Chris's kidnapping feels surreal, and we are struggling to make sense of the fact that he has been taken and that our family has been caught up in something that has nothing to do with us."
The family portrayed Baghsarian as a gentle and kind-hearted individual, stating, "Chris is a devoted father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He is deeply loved, gentle, and the kindest person we know – someone who would never hurt a fly." They have requested privacy during this extraordinarily distressing time as they await closure or resolution.
Police Investigation: Grave Concerns and No Ransom
Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Marks provided an update on Monday, revealing that police believe Baghsarian is still alive but hold grave concerns for his welfare, as he requires daily medication. Marks emphasised the unusual nature of the crime, stating, "This is not a typical crime. The offenders have got the wrong person. They were intending to take somebody but ... they have kidnapped the wrong person."
Notably, Marks confirmed that no ransom has been demanded, which deviates from standard kidnapping cases. "In a normal kidnapping case, we would be aware of a ransom. But because the family are not involved in this type of crime, and they're not involved in that world, they haven't received a ransom," he explained. Police are "1m per cent confident" that the kidnappers targeted the wrong individual, though Marks declined to speculate on the intended victim's identity.
Background and Community Impact
The incident occurred when Baghsarian was alone at home and was forcibly taken, bundled into a dark-coloured SUV. This abduction has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the unpredictable dangers of such criminal activities. The family's plea for space to support one another underscores the emotional toll on those affected by violent crimes.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, while the family remains hopeful for a safe return. This case serves as a stark reminder of the far-reaching consequences of criminal actions, even when they are based on error.
