Switzerland Mourns 40 Victims of Alpine Bar Fire in National Day of Remembrance
Swiss National Mourning for 40 Dead in Alpine Bar Fire

Switzerland is observing a solemn national day of mourning today, Friday 9 January 2026, to honour the forty people who lost their lives in a devastating fire at an Alpine bar during New Year's celebrations.

A Tragedy in the Alps

The fatal blaze erupted in the early hours of New Year's Day at the Le Constellation bar in the popular resort town of Crans-Montana. Forty people were killed and a further 116 were injured, many with serious burns, when the fire broke out less than two hours after midnight. The severity of the incident has sent shockwaves across the nation and beyond.

Investigation Points to Sparkling Candles

Investigators believe the fire was ignited by sparkling candles placed atop Champagne bottles, which came into contact with the ceiling. Authorities are now examining whether the soundproofing material on the ceiling met safety regulations and if the use of such candles was even permitted within the venue. A troubling detail to emerge is that fire safety inspections had not been conducted at the premises since 2019.

The identification process for some victims proved harrowing, as severe burns necessitated the use of DNA samples provided by grieving families. Police have indicated that many of those who died were young, ranging from their teens to mid-20s.

Criminal Probe and National Tribute

The Valais regional prosecutor's office has confirmed that a criminal investigation has been opened. The two managers of the bar are suspected of involuntary homicide, involuntary bodily harm, and involuntarily causing a fire.

As part of today's national tribute, church bells will ring across Switzerland for five minutes starting at 2 p.m. local time, followed by a minute of silence. A memorial service is being held to allow the country to collectively grieve one of its worst peacetime disasters in recent memory.
