Suspect Opens Fire Near National Mall After Confrontation

The Secret Service reported that a suspect opened fire on Monday near the National Mall following a confrontation with officers. Deputy Director Matt Quinn stated that agents returned fire, and a bystander was struck by the suspect's gunfire. The incident occurred near 15th Street and Independence Avenue, close to the Washington Monument.

Details of the Incident

Quinn noted that Vice President JD Vance's motorcade had passed through the area shortly before the shooting, but there is no indication it was targeted. The White House was briefly locked down as authorities investigated. President Donald Trump continued a small business event without interruption.

Casualties and Response

The suspect was taken to a local hospital and is reported to be conscious and breathing. A young bystander, described as a juvenile, was injured. The victim was able to walk to an ambulance and was transported to a hospital under Secret Service escort. D.C. Fire and EMS treated what appeared to be a teenage male for minor injuries.

The incident drew a large police presence and occurred just over a week after a gunman attempted to storm the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Cole Tomas Allen has been charged in that earlier incident, which wounded a Secret Service officer.
