Four students are in critical condition and a security guard has been injured after a stabbing at Foss High School in Tacoma, Washington. The suspect, a juvenile, has been charged with five counts of first-degree assault.

The incident occurred at lunchtime on Thursday, following a fight between students. First responders arrived to find five people stabbed or cut, including four students and an adult security guard. The alleged perpetrator sustained minor injuries and was taken into custody after treatment.

All victims were in a stable condition on Friday, according to officials. The school was placed on lockdown and later evacuated. Classes and after-school activities have been cancelled until Monday, when counselors and additional staff will be on campus to support students and staff.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, though one parent suggested the altercation was over a battery for a vaping device. Police have not released details of the weapon used. Foss High School, with 557 enrolled students, was the site of a fatal shooting in 2007.
