Six people required medical treatment after a man allegedly went on a violent rampage armed with a crowbar at a community hospital in Merseyside. The incident, which left NHS staff injured and fleeing in terror, unfolded at Newton Community Hospital in St Helens on Tuesday.
Appointment Refusal Sparks Violent Outburst
According to Merseyside Police, the suspect, a 20-year-old local man originally from Afghanistan, had requested an appointment at the hospital. He became "increasingly agitated" when this request was declined. After being asked to leave the premises, he allegedly damaged a counter before attacking people with what was described as a metal bar or crowbar.
Nurses Flee for Safety as Victims Treated
The attack caused panic, with nurses reportedly hiding and running from the scene. One nurse recounted fearing for her life, stating she was 'beaten nearly to death' after being struck over the head from behind while at a vending machine. She has since returned home safely to her family.
All six victims were treated at hospitals and walk-in centres for injuries including head lacerations, bruising, and wounds to their hands and arms. Police confirmed all were in a stable condition following the assault.
Police Investigation and Suspect's Detention
Forensic teams are examining the weapon used, while detectives review CCTV footage and speak to witnesses. A mobile police station remains on site at the hospital.
The suspect was initially arrested at the scene on suspicion of six counts of Section 18 wounding with intent, affray, and criminal damage. After being taken to a police station, he was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act, shifting the focus of his custody from criminal to mental health grounds.
The community and NHS staff are now seeking answers as the investigation into this shocking act of violence continues.
