The police watchdog has launched a formal investigation into a devastating head-on collision on the M90 motorway that resulted in the deaths of two drivers. The tragic incident occurred after one motorist was observed driving northbound in the southbound carriageway, leading to a catastrophic crash.
Chronology of the Fatal Incident
At approximately 10:30 PM on Friday, April 17, 2026, a grey Ford Kuga was reported travelling northbound on the southbound carriageway of the M90 near Kinross. A police officer on routine patrol in a marked vehicle witnessed the Kuga approaching in the wrong direction on a roundabout adjacent to junction six.
Despite the officer immediately activating blue emergency lights, the driver of the Ford Kuga failed to stop or correct course. The vehicle proceeded onto the southbound carriageway, continuing to travel north against the flow of traffic.
Police Pursuit and Collision
The patrol officer then entered the northbound carriageway, travelling correctly northbound, to monitor the situation. Shortly thereafter, the Ford Kuga collided with a white Vauxhall Corsa that was correctly travelling south on the southbound carriageway. The police vehicle subsequently encountered the collision scene on the opposing carriageway near junction seven.
Both drivers sustained fatal injuries in the impact. The 44-year-old male driver of the Ford Kuga and the 20-year-old male driver of the Vauxhall Corsa were pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency services responded promptly, but could not save their lives.
Investigation and Road Closures
In response to the fatal crash, the M90 was completely closed between junctions six and nine for approximately 16 hours to allow emergency services to conduct thorough investigations and clear the wreckage. The northbound carriageway also experienced a temporary overnight closure. The road has since been fully reopened to traffic.
Chief Inspector Lyne Williamson of the Operational Support Division addressed public speculation, stating, 'I am aware of rumours circulating on social media around the circumstances leading up to the fatal crash.' He confirmed that a mandatory referral has been made to the Police Investigation & Review Commissioner, the independent police watchdog.
Appeal for Information
Police Scotland have issued a public appeal for any witnesses or individuals with relevant dashcam footage to come forward. Chief Inspector Williamson urged, 'Extensive enquiries remain ongoing and I would again urge anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage to please contact Police Scotland.' The reference number for the incident is 3758 of 17 April, 2026.
The authorities have requested that the public refrain from speculation and respect the privacy of the grieving families. Our thoughts remain with them during this profoundly difficult time, as the community mourns this tragic loss of life on a major Scottish motorway.
