Nebraska Police Fatally Shoot Walmart Kidnapper in Dramatic Toddler Rescue
Omaha police officers were forced to use lethal force against a woman who abducted a three-year-old boy at knifepoint inside a Walmart store on Tuesday morning. The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight, saw 31-year-old Noemi Guzman snatch Cyler Hillman from his shopping cart while his mother Sara was present.
Horrifying Abduction Details Emerge
According to Omaha police reports, Guzman approached Sara Hillman and her son Cyler while brandishing a large kitchen knife that she had allegedly shoplifted from the store. She ordered Sara to leave the premises while taking possession of the child, effectively kidnapping him. Guzman then forced Sara to walk in front of the shopping cart as she pushed it toward the parking lot, holding the weapon against Cyler's body throughout the ordeal.
Horrifying photographs from the scene show Guzman pressing the knife directly to the toddler's head while issuing repeated threats. Police intercepted the group shortly after they exited the store, with officers giving multiple verbal commands for Guzman to drop the weapon.
Police Intervention and Shooting
When Guzman refused to comply with police orders and instead cut the young boy across his face, two officers fired their service weapons, striking and killing her. Sara Hillman and a bystander immediately removed Cyler from the cart and provided first aid. Police attempted life-saving measures on Guzman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cyler Hillman was transported to a nearby hospital with lacerations to his face and hand that required surgery and stitches. Family photos shared after the attack show the toddler with bandages on his face while being comforted by his father in a hospital chair.
Family Impact and Support Campaign
The Hillman family has been described as "shaken and in need of support" according to a GoFundMe campaign organized to help with medical bills, therapy, and daily expenses during Cyler's recovery. Campaign organizer Tanya Gifford revealed that Cyler's father was at a job interview when the attack occurred and now must postpone employment to focus on his son's healing.
"This unexpected turn has created financial stress at home," Gifford wrote, "as Cyler's father must focus on his son's healing rather than work." Sara Hillman, a mother who shares parenting content online, urged her followers to "please pray for my baby" following the traumatic event.
Suspect's Troubled Background
Police revealed that Guzman had a history of concerning behavior. She was arrested in 2024 after her father's home was set on fire and was also accused of breaking into a church rectory in South Omaha. In that previous case, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity and assigned a treatment plan, with her annual review scheduled for June 12 of this year.
Deputy Police Chief Scott Gray told reporters there was no indication Guzman knew the Hillman family, and her motives for targeting them remain unclear. Police have extended their sincere condolences to Guzman's family and friends during what they described as a difficult time.
Official Responses and Investigation
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer praised his officers' actions, stating: "The responding officers acted with professionalism and direct action to intervene and save a child's life. The community can be reassured in knowing that Omaha police officers stand ready to act with courage and decisiveness in the most serious situations to protect the public."
Omaha Mayor John W. Ewing Jr. also thanked police for their quick response, expressing gratitude for the department's professionalism and transparency. Walmart has condemned the violence, with a company spokesperson stating: "Violence like this is unacceptable. We're working with police and supporting them in their investigation."
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid critical incident leave per department policy, standard procedure in such incidents. The investigation remains ongoing, with the officers scheduled to be interviewed at a later time. No police personnel were injured during the confrontation.
