Homicide Squad Takes Over Sebastopol Baby Death Probe
Homicide detectives have launched an investigation into the tragic death of a one-year-old baby boy in the regional Victorian town of Sebastopol. The infant passed away in a Melbourne hospital on Thursday, 6 November, two days after being rushed from his home by his mother and her partner.
Timeline of a Tragedy
The distressing sequence of events began at approximately 12pm on Tuesday, 4 November. The baby boy was at his home in Sebastopol, south of Ballarat, when he became unresponsive. His 26-year-old mother and her 18-year-old partner immediately rushed him to a Melbourne hospital for urgent medical assistance.
Despite the best efforts of medical teams, the child, who has not been publicly named, could not be saved. He died in hospital, with his death now the subject of a major police investigation.
Police Investigation Intensifies
Victoria Police confirmed that the case has been handed to the Homicide Squad, which is now leading the inquiry alongside the Ballarat Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Investigation Team. In an official statement, police said, "The exact circumstances leading up to the child’s death are still being determined."
