An osteopath and masseur has appeared before Newcastle Crown Court to formally deny a staggering 55 sexual offences relating to 14 different female clients. Terence McBrien, a 72-year-old resident of Alnwick in Northumberland, attended a hearing on Thursday that lasted approximately one hour, during which he responded to each charge with a clear "not guilty" plea.
Extensive List of Charges
The court clerk required more than 16 minutes to read aloud the comprehensive list of 55 charges against McBrien. This extensive catalogue includes one count of attempted rape, seven counts of sexual assault by penetration, 34 counts of sexual assault by touching, and 13 separate counts of voyeurism.
Prosecution Details Allegations
Prosecutor Kama Melly KC informed the court that all charges relate to 14 women who engaged with McBrien while he was offering professional services as either a masseur or osteopath. The alleged offences span a significant period between 2011 and 2021, indicating a pattern of behaviour over approximately a decade.
Trial Scheduled for 2027
Judge Edward Bindloss has scheduled a trial that could last up to four months, beginning on April 19, 2027. In the interim period, McBrien has been granted conditional bail and must attend two pre-trial hearings scheduled for July and March of the coming year.
Police Investigation and Community Appeal
Detective Sergeant Michael Rainbow, who led the Northumbria Police investigation into the allegations against McBrien, described the inquiry as "complex and lengthy" before charges were brought. Following the court proceedings, police have issued a renewed appeal for information from the public.
"We recognise the nature and number of the charges may raise concern and anxiety within our communities," stated Detective Sergeant Rainbow. "We would encourage anyone who does have concerns or believes they have information which is relevant to this case to come forward."
