A large-scale manhunt is currently active in Tennessee for Craig Berry, a retired US Army Special Forces veteran who is considered armed and dangerous after allegedly shooting his wife.
Incident Details
According to the Stewart County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a reported shooting at Berry's residence during a domestic dispute at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Friday. By the time law enforcement arrived, Berry had already fled into the surrounding woods.
Berry's wife, a teacher at Stewart County Schools whose identity has not been released, was able to escape the home and drive away after being shot, as reported by WCNC. She was reportedly recovering in the hospital as of Monday night, though her condition remains unclear.
Search Efforts
Authorities have been scouring a remote, heavily wooded area for any sign of Berry since he fled the scene. He is being sought on charges of second-degree attempted murder.
The Sheriff's Office has warned that Berry should not be approached under any circumstances and urges residents to lock their doors and remain vigilant. Berry was last tracked by K9 units on River Trace Road, and a trail camera photo confirmed he was wearing camouflage clothing.
Suspect Profile
Deputies noted that Berry is a retired special forces veteran with extensive survival training. He is described as an excellent swimmer and diver, in good physical shape, and is believed to be armed with at least one handgun and extra ammunition. Officials have not ruled out the possibility that Berry received assistance after the shooting, but they do not believe he has a phone or other means of communication.
The Stewart County Sheriff's Office is working with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, state Homeland Security, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to track Berry down. Authorities are asking anyone who sees anything suspicious or has information on Berry's whereabouts to call 911 immediately.
