Man Jailed for Killing Seven Guinea Pigs

A man has been sentenced to prison for killing seven guinea pigs in a series of brutal attacks that have horrified the local community in Fife, Scotland. George Gordon, 34, appeared at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Tuesday where he was jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the animals.

Details of the Attacks

The court heard that Gordon killed the guinea pigs between January and March 2024 at his home in Glenrothes. The attacks were described as "sustained and violent" by the sheriff, who noted that Gordon had shown a "complete disregard for the welfare of the animals." The RSPCA became involved after a member of the public reported concerns about the animals' welfare.

RSPCA Investigation

Inspectors from the RSPCA visited Gordon's property and discovered the remains of several guinea pigs. They also found other guinea pigs living in squalid conditions, with inadequate food, water, and shelter. The surviving animals were seized and rehomed. RSPCA inspector Jenny Scott said: "This was a shocking case of animal cruelty. The guinea pigs suffered greatly, and it is appalling that anyone could treat animals in such a way."

Sentencing and Reaction

Sheriff Michael O'Grady told Gordon: "Your actions were cruel and unnecessary. You have caused significant suffering to these animals, and a custodial sentence is the only appropriate punishment." In addition to the jail term, Gordon was banned from keeping animals for life. The sentence has been welcomed by animal welfare groups, who have called for tougher penalties for animal cruelty.

Scottish SPCA chief superintendent Mike Flynn said: "We welcome the sentence and hope it sends a clear message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. We urge anyone who witnesses animal abuse to report it immediately."
