Man Appears in Court Following City Centre Stabbing

A 21-year-old man has been formally charged with attempted murder after a woman was brutally stabbed in the neck in what authorities are describing as an unprovoked attack in the heart of Birmingham.

Djeison Rafael is now facing charges of attempted murder, two further assaults, and possession of a blade, according to an official statement released by West Midlands Police.

Violent Incident Near New Street Station

Emergency services were called to Smallbrook Queensway in Birmingham at approximately 9pm on Friday, November 7, following multiple reports of a stabbing. The location is situated just yards from the bustling Birmingham New Street station.

The victim, a woman in her 30s, sustained a serious neck injury and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. Medical staff continue to treat her for what has been described as a life-threatening wound.

Third Stabbing in City Centre in Over a Month

This shocking incident marks the third reported stabbing in Birmingham city centre in just over a month, raising significant concerns about public safety.

In October, two separate attacks occurred within a week, including one where two 17-year-old boys were knifed outside a Primark store. Prior to that assault, approximately ten men were reportedly involved in a violent altercation near the city's iconic bronze Bull sculpture.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed her shock at the latest attack, stating on social media platform X: 'I am shocked to hear a woman was stabbed in Birmingham in an unprovoked attack. My thoughts are with the victim, her family and friends.'

She continued, 'I thank the police for their swift action to arrest a suspect. I urge any witnesses to contact West Midlands Police.'

Police Appeal for Witnesses

West Midlands Police have confirmed that their investigation remains active and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Authorities have released a description of Rafael's clothing at the time of the incident, noting he was wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers, and a rucksack.

The police statement emphasised: 'We are continuing our inquiries and are keen to hear from anyone who knows more about what happened or the movements of Rafael.'

Djeison Rafael has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before magistrates in Birmingham on Monday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact West Midlands Police by calling 101 and quoting log number 5503 of November 7.
