Man Arrested Over Attacks on Jewish Sites in London

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts by counter-terror police investigating a string of attacks on Jewish sites in London. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the arrest took place at an address near Barnstaple, Devon, on Sunday.

Details of the Arrest

The suspect was taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of incidents targeting Jewish community locations. According to police, there have been 26 people connected to the attacks since late March. The incidents include arson attacks on Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green, north-west London, a synagogue, and a former Jewish charity. Additionally, a drone was flown near the Israeli embassy.

Possible Involvement of Iranian Proxies

Counter-terror police have been examining the potential involvement of Iranian proxies in these attacks. Premises linked to individuals opposing the Iranian regime have also been targeted, the Met stated last week. An attempted arson attack occurred on April 15 at Finchley Reform Synagogue and at approximately 8:30 PM outside the offices of a Persian media company, both located in north-west London.

Legal Proceedings

On Tuesday, a 17-year-old boy pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates’ Court to arson not endangering life following the attack on Kenton United Synagogue. This development marks a significant step in the legal process related to the series of attacks.

Prime Minister’s Response

Speaking at the Kenton United Synagogue during a visit on Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer addressed the situation. He stated: “We have to deal with malign state actors, that will require legislation. We’re going to bring that legislation forward. It’s really important we do that. It’s very important in this particular context because I’m increasingly concerned that a number of countries are using proxies for attacks in this country.”

During a roundtable discussion with leaders of the Jewish community, including Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis and local representatives from the Kenton United Synagogue, the Prime Minister emphasized that the fight to practice their religion freely is “all of our fight.”
