Elderly Maine Philanthropist Found Murdered in Maryland Senior Living Facility
An 87-year-old wealthy lawyer and author from Maine has been discovered shot dead inside his apartment at a premium senior living facility in Maryland. Robert Fuller Jr was found with a gunshot wound to the head at the Cogir Potomac Senior Living facility, where he paid $9,000 monthly for residence.
Discovery and Immediate Response
Montgomery County Fire Department personnel and police officers discovered Fuller's body just after 7:30 AM on Saturday morning. The beloved lawyer, author, and philanthropist was unresponsive when first responders arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
Law enforcement officials have officially determined that Fuller's death resulted from a homicide. However, investigators have not yet identified any suspects in the case, leaving the motive and circumstances surrounding the killing unclear.
A Life of Service and Philanthropy
Robert Fuller Jr was well-known throughout Augusta, Maine, where he practiced law for more than 35 years before relocating to Maryland to be closer to family members. His move to the Cogir Potomac facility represented a significant lifestyle change for the octogenarian.
Fuller's philanthropic legacy in Maine was substantial and far-reaching. In 2021 alone, he made a remarkable $1,640,000 donation to fund improvements at the Alumni Field athletic complex at Cony High School. His charitable work extended across multiple community organizations including:
- Local hospital systems
- Historical preservation societies
- YMCA facilities and programs
- Various community service organizations
He also established a scholarship fund administered by the Le Club Calumet Educational Foundation, designed to help high school students from Augusta and neighboring communities pursue higher education opportunities.
Community Reactions and Facility Response
Rachel Grant, Executive Director of Cogir of Potomac, communicated via email that she could not share specific details about the incident to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. However, she emphasized that this was an isolated incident and assured residents and staff that there was no ongoing threat to their safety.
Grant confirmed that security measures have been enhanced at the senior living facility following the tragic event. Additionally, counseling services are being offered to residents who may be affected by the violent death within their community.
Friends and acquaintances expressed profound shock and sadness upon learning of Fuller's death. One Facebook post captured the community's disbelief: "Not even safe in a senior living facility. Bob did so much for Augusta. God rest his soul." Another individual recalled their father working with Fuller, describing him as "a very nice person" who would be deeply missed.
Personal Life and Legacy
Robert Fuller Jr met his wife Moira in 2001, and the couple remained together until her passing in May 2023. Their relationship represented a significant chapter in Fuller's later years, providing companionship and shared experiences.
Mayor Dave Rollins of Augusta previously expressed the community's profound gratitude for Fuller's contributions, stating: "It's hard to express our depth of gratitude to Bob for what he has done for and continues to do for our City. I speak for the entire community when I say 'Thank you Bob Fuller - Augusta is a better place because of you.'"
Fuller himself articulated his philanthropic philosophy when discussing his donation to Cony High School: "I believe that when a high school has a continuing history of athletic success, it fosters a sense of community pride. It rubs off. When this pride is evident it becomes easier to attract people who'll add value – doctors, teachers, artists, entrepreneurs – and who'll choose to stay around."
He further explained: "Not only because Augusta has the superior facilities and services they demand but it's also where a visitor can detect that its citizens are upbeat and enjoy living where they are. You can't have successful teams these days without the infrastructure you need to support them. So I don't think of my action as simply a gift but rather as an investment in Augusta's future."
The investigation into Robert Fuller Jr's murder continues as authorities work to identify potential suspects and determine the circumstances that led to this violent act within what should have been a secure senior living environment.
