Shocking CCTV footage has emerged capturing the terrifying moment up to one hundred innocent bystanders were forced to run for their lives after a brutal machete attack erupted outside a popular dessert bar in Melbourne. The violent incident unfolded at approximately 7:45 PM on Friday evening, sending waves of panic through the Eaton Mall in Oakleigh, located about 14 kilometres south-east of the city's central business district.
Chaos Erupts in Crowded Mall
According to police reports, a group of twelve individuals were seated outside the Vanilla dessert bar when they were approached by a large group of unknown offenders. The assailants, wearing balaclavas to conceal their identities, included at least two individuals brandishing machetes. The confrontation quickly escalated into a violent assault, targeting an 18-year-old man from Malvern East.
Victims and Injuries
The 18-year-old victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. A 16-year-old boy was also assaulted during the chaotic scene but, fortunately, did not suffer any physical injuries. The chilling CCTV footage, obtained by local media, graphically shows the attackers kicking, punching, and slashing at the older teenager with a machete.
Witnesses described a scene of absolute pandemonium, with approximately 150 bystanders fleeing in terror as the violence erupted. One person recording the incident can be heard shouting in the footage, 'He's got a knife, he's got a knife. Oh my days. He's got a f***ing machete, bro.' Another witness recounted, 'Vanilla was full of people and everyone was sitting down. A group of about 10 kids and teenagers then showed up in masks and argued with this guy. Suddenly one of the guys pulled out a machete and stabbed the guy across the face from the neck to the cheek. They were kids, they seemed really young.'
Community Left in Shock
An employee from a nearby business added to the harrowing accounts, stating, 'We just saw people running and screaming. About 150 people all running in fear at the same time.' The attack has left the local community in Oakleigh deeply shaken, prompting concerns about public safety in the area.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the assault, the group of attackers fled the scene on foot. As of now, no arrests have been made, and detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the violent episode. Authorities have indicated that the incident is being treated as a targeted attack, with parties believed to be known to each other.
In response to the community's fears, police have announced that proactive patrols will be increased in the Eaton Mall area to provide reassurance and enhance security. Law enforcement officials are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, possesses dashcam or CCTV footage, or has any relevant information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers immediately.
The brazen nature of the attack, occurring in a public space filled with families and diners, has raised significant alarm. The combination of masked assailants, lethal weapons, and the sheer scale of the bystander exodus underscores the severity of the event, which continues to be a focal point for local authorities and residents alike.
