Heavily Armed Individual Detained Near Trump's Los Angeles Golf Club
Law enforcement authorities in Los Angeles County have confirmed the arrest of a heavily armed man in close proximity to President Donald Trump's golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Sean Steiner from Glendale, was apprehended while reportedly running through traffic on Palos Verdes Drive South, a roadway that passes directly alongside the Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles.
Disturbing Weapon Modifications Discovered
According to detailed statements released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Steiner was found in possession of a semi-automatic short-barreled rifle that had been conspicuously modified with purple and green paint. Most alarmingly, the weapon featured painted phrases directly referencing the iconic Batman villain, the Joker, including "why so serious?" and "let's put a smile on that face." Investigators noted the rifle's tip had been painted orange, giving it the appearance of a toy firearm despite being fully operational and loaded with a round in the chamber and a full magazine.
Extensive Arsenal and Concerning Behavior
During the arrest operation, deputies successfully recovered not only the modified rifle but also two loaded handguns, multiple high-capacity magazines, and a ballistic vest capable of stopping bullet rounds. Steiner had reportedly been observed hiking through nearby trails while wearing rifle-rated body armor and carrying a duffel bag and gloves. Witnesses had also spotted him with both a rifle and a step stool in the area prior to his apprehension.
In conversations with arresting officers, Steiner allegedly admitted to firing one of his pistols in the vicinity to "get some anger out." The LASD emphasized the gravity of the situation in their official statement, noting: "Let that sink in. An armed individual, firing a weapon, walking through traffic and trails... in a populated area. Because someone spoke up, deputies were able to safely detain him before anyone was hurt."
Multiple Felony Charges Filed
Steiner has now been formally booked on multiple felony firearm charges following his arrest. The incident occurred near a location that had previously hosted political demonstrations, including a peaceful "No Kings" protest in March where participants displayed signs and chanted anti-Trump slogans.
Historical Context of Golf Course Security Incidents
This arrest marks another security concern near Trump-associated golf properties. In a separate incident dating back to September 2024, another individual was arrested after attempting to assassinate then-presidential candidate Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida. Ryan Wesley Routh was discovered with an AK-47-style rifle positioned through a sniper's hide near the golf course perimeter.
Former U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Robert Fercano encountered the weapon while patrolling just one hole ahead of Trump's position and opened fire, causing Routh to flee the scene. Routh was subsequently apprehended, found guilty of attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assault of a federal law enforcement officer, and multiple firearms offenses. In February 2026, he received a life sentence in federal prison with an additional 84 months added to his term.
That assassination attempt occurred mere months after Trump was shot and wounded at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024, highlighting ongoing security challenges surrounding the former president and his properties.
