German Cannibal Case: Man Consented to Death by Neighbour

The Horrific Case of German Cannibal Armin Meiwes

In a quiet town in north-west Germany, a seemingly harmless neighbour harboured dark fantasies that would culminate in one of the most stomach-churning crimes in modern history. Armin Meiwes, a 42-year-old computer technician from Rotenburg, appeared to be a helpful community member, often mowing lawns and fixing cars. However, behind closed doors, he nurtured a lifelong desire to consume another human being, a fantasy rooted in childhood dreams of intimacy and control.

A Fateful Online Encounter

In the late 1990s, Meiwes turned to the internet to find like-minded individuals. In 2001, he posted an advertisement titled 'Dinner - or your dinner' on an online forum, seeking a young, well-built man willing to be eaten. Bernd Brandes, a 43-year-old engineer from Berlin, responded to the ad. The two men communicated extensively, discussing boundaries and consent, before arranging to meet at Meiwes' remote farmhouse.

The Gruesome Night of March 2001

On that fateful night, Brandes swallowed 20 sleeping pills and half a bottle of schnapps. With his consent, Meiwes then cut off Brandes' penis, fried it, and they shared the horrific meal. Brandes was bleeding heavily but took a bath while Meiwes calmly read a Star Trek novel. In the early hours, Meiwes killed Brandes by stabbing him in the neck with a large kitchen knife, reportedly kissing him first.

Meiwes proceeded to chop the body into pieces, storing some in his freezer next to a takeaway pizza and burying the skull in the garden. Over the next ten months, he defrosted and cooked parts of Brandes' body in olive oil and garlic, consuming approximately 20kg of human flesh before police finally intervened.

Legal Nightmare and Trials

An Austrian student alerted authorities in 2002 after reading Meiwes' gruesome online posts. The case presented a legal challenge, as cannibalism was not explicitly illegal in Germany. Prosecutors charged Meiwes with murder for sexual pleasure and disturbing the peace of the dead, relying on a videotape where Brandes apparently consented to being killed and eaten.

In January 2004, Meiwes was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to eight and a half years, sparking public outrage. Prosecutors appealed, arguing for a murder conviction based on evidence of sexual gratification. A retrial in January 2006 led to Meiwes being convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Aftermath and Disturbing Revelations

In a documentary, Meiwes described the experience, stating, "The flesh tastes like pork but stronger." He claimed it fulfilled a 40-year longing for a perfect inner connection. Experts warned during the retrial that Meiwes still fantasised about devouring young flesh and could re-offend if released. In a bizarre twist, he has since renounced meat and become a vegetarian while serving his life sentence.

This case continues to shock and fascinate, highlighting extreme psychological disorders and the complexities of consent in criminal law.
