Four Arrested Over £80k Stolen Tools in London

Four individuals have been apprehended by police following the seizure of stolen tools valued at approximately £80,000 from a car boot sale in west London. The Metropolitan Police conducted the operation at Hounslow Heath on December 11, recovering around 400 items including power drills, nail guns, electric saws, and a concrete mixer.

Arrests Made and Recovery Operation

The arrests include two men aged 55 and 54, alongside two 15-year-old boys, all detained on suspicion of handling stolen goods. According to police statements, the suspects remain on bail while investigations continue. The operation was specifically launched in response to growing concerns about tool theft affecting tradespeople across the region.

Appeal to Reunite Tools with Owners

Police have now initiated a public appeal to return the recovered tools to their legitimate owners. PC Thomas Coonan from the Hounslow local policing team confirmed that approximately £6,000 worth of equipment has already been restored to tradesmen. Officers have published a series of photographs on their official website to assist with identification.

PC Coonan emphasised: 'We are listening to concerns about tool theft because we understand the significant impact it has on tradespeople and their livelihoods. We are targeting prolific offenders and organised criminal groups that drive this trade in stolen tools through proactive, intelligence-led operations.'

Proof of Ownership Requirements

The Metropolitan Police have outlined specific evidence required to claim recovered tools. Acceptable proof includes serial numbers, batch numbers accompanied by initials or unique markings, photographs of items with unique reference numbers, or official crime reports containing make and reference details. Authorities have indicated they will consider alternative forms of verification on a case-by-case basis.

Preventative Measures and Security Advice

In addition to the recovery operation, police are urging tradespeople to implement security measures to protect their equipment. Recommendations include marking tools with synthetic DNA for forensic identification and registering serial numbers with both manufacturers and the UK National Property Register.

How to Claim Recovered Items

Tradespeople who believe their stolen tools may be among the recovered items are instructed to contact police via email at HounslowWest@met.police.uk. Correspondence must include the relevant image reference number alongside documented proof of ownership. The police appeal represents a concerted effort to combat what has become a significant issue affecting the trades sector in London and beyond.
