Five Convicted Killers Face Life Sentences for Brutal Machete Murder in South London

Five violent gang members who hacked a young man to death with machetes in a savage south London attack are now facing mandatory life imprisonment sentences. The horrific incident saw the victim's fingertips deliberately sliced off during the frenzied assault, which unfolded in the Walworth area last spring.

A Vicious and Targeted Attack

Giovanny Rendon Bedoya, aged just 21, met his tragic end during what prosecutors described as a 'vicious onslaught' from a South American gang on Hillingdon Street in Walworth. The fatal confrontation occurred in April of last year, shortly after the victim had moved into a flat on the street where he was squatting temporarily.

The court heard harrowing details of how Bedoya was chased into an alleyway near the intersection of Hillingdon Street and Langdale Close, SE17, where he was cornered and ambushed by the five-strong gang. Metropolitan Police officers responded to emergency calls reporting a knife fight at approximately 9:15 pm on April 14, 2025, discovering the victim behind a block of flats with catastrophic stab wounds.

Frantic Efforts and Fatal Outcome

Despite paramedics' frantic attempts to save his life at the scene, Giovanny Rendon Bedoya was pronounced dead less than one hour later. A subsequent post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as 'multiple sharp-force injuries' consistent with a sustained knife and machete attack.

The convicted killers - Angel Gonzalez Angulo, 19, Christian Batista-Gonzalez, 23, Brian Villada-Hernandes, 19, Zozoro Boizo, 21, and Joseph Jimenez, 22 - all denied murder charges but were unanimously convicted by a jury after eighteen hours of deliberation. The verdicts came exactly one year after the fatal attack, following an intensive Metropolitan Police investigation.

Forensic Evidence and Gang Tensions

Detectives believe the targeted killing resulted from escalating tensions between two rival groups operating in the area. Forensic analysis proved crucial to the investigation, with Villada-Hernandez apprehended at the scene shortly after the murder. Laboratory tests later identified the victim's blood on his tracksuit, which also bore slash marks consistent with a violent knife struggle.

Digital forensics further implicated the group when messages recovered from Hernandez's phone revealed panicked discussions about destroying evidence and monitoring police movements. Metropolitan Police detectives meticulously reviewed over 1,500 hours of CCTV footage to reconstruct the gang's movements before and after the killing.

Elaborate Escape Attempts and International Manhunt

The CCTV investigation identified a property on Langdale Close being used as a squat by the attackers. Footage captured Angulo and Boizo fleeing the squat by taxi immediately following the killing to seek refuge at a friend's house. Prosecutors presented evidence showing Angulo later changing his clothes while carrying a bin bag they believe contained the murder weapons and blood-stained clothing.

While some defendants were captured quickly, others attempted elaborate escapes. Jimenez was eventually tracked down and arrested in Chichester after fleeing London. Most notably, Batista-Gonzalez managed to flee the country entirely, prompting an international search that led to his location and arrest near Barcelona on May 19, 2025, before extradition to the United Kingdom to stand trial.

Prosecution Details the Brutality

Prosecutor Anthony Orchard, KC, provided chilling details to the court: 'At 9.15pm on 14 April 2025 Giovanny Rendon Bedoya was chased by a group of armed youths onto the grass area behind the block of flats into which he had just moved in Walworth. The group of five armed youths attacked him. The attack was vicious.'

Orchard continued: 'Three of the fingertips of Giovanny Bedoya's right hand were severed. He suffered two substantial injuries to his left eye and face, and further injuries to his body, and his lower limbs. A total of at least twelve knife or machete-related injuries were subsequently identified.'

The prosecutor emphasized the victim's vulnerability: 'The five defendants chased him. He was cornered and set upon by the whole group. He was defenceless. He had no weapon with him. He was surrounded in a corner at the rear of the block of flats and attacked.'

Community Impact and Police Response

Several members of the public called emergency services to report a group fighting in the street with knives in the Hillingdon Street and Langdale Close areas. The armed attackers fled the scene, leaving Giovanny Bedoya dying on the ground. When police and paramedics arrived, they found him collapsed on the grass area, where he would be pronounced dead 53 minutes later.

Police subsequently went to a nearby address where people were squatting and arrested Villada-Hernandes and his girlfriend. All defendants had been at that address before the stabbing, according to court testimony.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn, who led the investigation, stated: 'This was a sustained and extremely violent attack, carried out by a group acting together. Giovanny was chased and killed in brutal circumstances, and today's convictions reflect the strength of the evidence and the determination of the investigation team.'

She added: 'Our thoughts remain with Giovanny's family and loved ones, who have shown immense dignity throughout these proceedings. Such brutality has no place on our streets - it rips families and communities apart. That's why the Met is doing everything it can to target dangerous offenders and prevent senseless violence.'

Sentencing and Legal Proceedings

All five convicted men - Gonzalez Angulo of Camberwell, Batista-Gonzalez of Leyton, Villada-Hernandez of Lambeth, Boizo of Southwark, and Jimenez of no fixed address - are scheduled to be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, May 20. They face mandatory life sentences for their roles in the brutal murder that has shocked the local community and highlighted ongoing concerns about gang violence in London.
