Tragic Collision on A19 Following High-Speed Police Pursuit
A young woman has been killed and a man is in a critical, life-threatening condition following a devastating car crash that occurred during a high-speed police chase on the A19 dual carriageway near Sunderland. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning, has led to an arrest and prompted an independent investigation by the police watchdog.
Details of the Fatal Pursuit and Collision
The tragic sequence of events began at approximately 2:55 am when officers from Northumbria Police identified a white BMW M135 as a vehicle of interest on the A184 in the Felling area of Gateshead. According to police reports, the driver failed to stop when instructed, instead accelerating away, which authorised a pursuit.
The BMW proceeded along the A184 until it reached the junction with the A19. Police followed the vehicle up the slip road to a roundabout, where it was observed taking the wrong exit, entering the southbound lanes of the A19 while travelling in the northbound direction—effectively driving on the wrong side of the dual carriageway.
At around 3 am, the high-performance hot hatch car collided head-on with a grey Volkswagen Sharan that was travelling correctly northbound. The impact was severe, resulting in immediate fatalities and serious injuries.
Casualties and Arrest in the Aftermath
Tragically, a woman in her 20s, who was a passenger in the BMW, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, a man also in his 20s, sustained grave injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition, fighting for his life. Both individuals were occupants of the BMW during the ill-fated chase.
The 24-year-old driver of the BMW was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody as investigations continue. Fortunately, the driver of the Volkswagen Sharan was taken to hospital but did not suffer serious injuries, according to authorities.

Northumbria Police has confirmed that the family of the deceased woman has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers. In line with standard procedure following incidents involving deaths or serious injuries during police pursuits, the force has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
An IOPC spokesperson stated, Our investigation will look at police actions prior to the fatal collision. Investigators were dispatched to the scene to gather evidence, and an independent inquiry has been officially launched. The IOPC also plans to contact the woman's family to offer condolences and explain their role.
Sergeant Greg Huntley of Northumbria Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit expressed condolences, saying, Firstly, our thoughts go out to the woman's loved ones as they process this tragic news, and also to the families of those injured. He acknowledged the road closure between the A1231 at Hylton Grange and the A184 Testos roundabout, which lasted several hours before reopening, and thanked the public for their patience.
