A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning in Sunderland, resulting in the death of a young woman after a vehicle fleeing police drove on the wrong side of a dual carriageway. Northumbria Police have confirmed the details of this devastating crash, which has led to an arrest and a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The collision occurred at approximately 3am on Sunday on the A19 in Sunderland. It involved a grey Volkswagen Sharan and a white BMW. According to police reports, the white BMW was initially spotted by officers at around 2.55am as it travelled on the A184 in the Felling area of Gateshead. A pursuit was initiated after the vehicle failed to stop when instructed by police.
Minutes before the crash, the same BMW was sighted travelling south on the northbound carriageway of the A19, a dangerous manoeuvre that ultimately led to the fatal incident. Emergency services rushed to the scene, where sadly a female passenger from the BMW was confirmed deceased. She was in her 20s, and her family has been informed and is receiving support from specially trained officers.
Injuries and Arrests
A 24-year-old man, identified as the driver of the BMW, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody at this time. Additionally, a male passenger in the BMW, also in his 20s, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a life-threatening condition.
The male driver of the Volkswagen Sharan was also taken to hospital for treatment, but his injuries are not deemed to be serious. The A19 was closed in both directions between the junctions of the A1231 at Hylton Grange and the A184 Testos roundabout for several hours following the crash to allow for investigations, but it has since re-opened to traffic.
Police Response and Investigation
Northumbria Police have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for a thorough investigation. Sergeant Greg Huntley of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit expressed condolences, stating, "Firstly, our thoughts go out to the woman’s loved ones as they process this tragic news, and also to the families of those injured."
He added, "A section of the A19 was closed as our officers and the IOPC carried out enquiries at the scene, but the road has since been re-opened to traffic. We’d like to thank the public for their patience today while this was ongoing and would ask people to please refrain from any speculation online and in the community in the meantime."
