Man Extradited from Nigeria Charged in 2018 London Knife Murder of Trainee Engineer
A man has been extradited from Nigeria and charged with the 2018 murder of a 23-year-old trainee engineer in London. Matthew Adebiyi, 25, arrived in the UK capital on Wednesday, where he was remanded in custody over the fatal stabbing of Joshua Boadu.
Details of the Fatal Attack
Joshua Boadu, known as SJ, was attacked in broad daylight on Linsey Street in Bermondsey, south east London, on June 11, 2018. He suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest, neck, and arm during the violent assault. Rushed to hospital in a critical condition, SJ experienced a heart attack en route and was placed on life support. Tragically, his life support was turned off ten days later, leading to his death.
Legal Proceedings and Previous Convictions
Adebiyi was due to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on Wednesday following his extradition. This case adds to the legal saga surrounding SJ's murder, as two others have already been convicted for the crime. In September 2019, a 27-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy from Southwark were sentenced at the Old Bailey for their roles in the killing.
Family's Heartbreaking Statements
Following the 2019 convictions, SJ's family released a poignant statement, expressing their enduring grief. They described the "astronomical" impact of his loss, noting that "words cannot begin to describe how life has been since Josh's passing." They emphasized that SJ had "his whole life ahead of him" and was full of untapped potential, calling his death a "vicious and senseless murder."
His father, Frank, shared memories of SJ as a "wonderful and caring boy" who was not involved in gangs and was well-liked by many friends. He highlighted SJ's plans, including a deferred university place to pursue a trade, and a family trip to Canada scheduled for the day after the stabbing. Frank urged an end to street violence, stating, "The violence on London's streets must end."
SJ's sister, Lady, 22, echoed this sentiment, pleading, "Put the knives down, it has to stop." A friend remembered SJ as "one of the best people," who loved house music and was cherished by all.
Ongoing Impact and Community Response
This extradition marks a significant development in a case that has highlighted the devastating effects of knife crime in London. The family's calls for action against violence resonate as communities continue to grapple with similar tragedies. The legal process for Adebiyi is now underway, with authorities working to bring closure to a case that has left a lasting scar on those involved.
