A former Metropolitan Police inspector has been charged with five counts of rape and a series of other offences spanning 12 years, the force has confirmed.
John Doyle, 53, who previously served in the Met's Specialist Firearms Command, faces a total of 17 charges. The alleged offences occurred between 2012 and 2024 and involve a single victim.
Doyle, from Liverpool, was initially arrested on 24 June 2024 and later dismissed on 10 December following a private misconduct hearing. He was charged by post on Wednesday 4 February and is due to appear in court on Wednesday 11 February.
The charges include controlling or coercive behaviour, multiple counts of rape, assault by penetration, and misconduct in public office. Catherine Baccas, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London South, said: 'The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to charge John Doyle... this follows allegations made by a woman relating to a period of alleged abuse spanning 12 years.'
Baccas emphasised that proceedings are active and the defendant has the right to a fair trial, urging the public not to report or share information that could prejudice the case.
