Eight Children Killed in Louisiana Mass Shooting, Suspect Dies After Police Chase
Authorities in Shreveport, Louisiana, have confirmed that a gunman killed eight children in a series of domestic violence-related shootings at two separate homes early on Sunday morning. The victims, ranging in age from just one year old to approximately 14 years old, were part of what police describe as the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years.
Extensive Crime Scene and Police Response
Chris Bordelon, spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department, stated that the incident involved an extensive and harrowing scene unlike anything most officers have ever witnessed. In total, ten people were shot during the attacks, with some of the children being related to the suspect, whose identity has not yet been publicly released but is confirmed to be an adult male.
The gunman fled the scene after the shootings, stealing a car and leading police on a pursuit. Officers eventually fired at the suspect, who later died. No law enforcement personnel were harmed during the chase, which extended into Bossier City. Louisiana State Police detectives have been called in to assist with the investigation, which spans multiple crime scenes south of downtown Shreveport, including the two homes and a third location.
Community Shock and Eyewitness Accounts
Local residents expressed profound shock and grief. Liza Demming, who lives two houses away from one of the attack sites, reported that her security camera captured video of the suspect running away, accompanied by the sound of two gunshots. She later went outside and saw the covered body of a child on the home's roof. Demming noted that the gunman appeared to be a father figure who had been with the children just days prior.
At a news conference outside one of the residences, Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith and Mayor Tom Arceneaux appeared visibly stunned. Chief Smith expressed his heartbreak, stating he could not begin to imagine how such an event could occur. Mayor Arceneaux described the situation as potentially the worst tragedy the city has ever faced, emphasizing the terrible impact on the community of approximately 180,000 residents.
National Context and Official Responses
According to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University, this shooting marks the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since eight people were killed in a Chicago suburb in January 2024. The incident has drawn responses from state and national figures.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is from Shreveport, issued separate statements expressing heartbreak and praising law enforcement's response. Speaker Johnson emphasized holding the victims, their families, and the Shreveport community close in thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
Authorities are urging anyone with pictures, video, or information related to the shootings to come forward and share it with state police detectives as the investigation continues to unfold.
