Eight people have been arrested as part of an attempted murder investigation in Newcastle following an attack that left a woman and a man, both in their 60s, with serious injuries. Emergency services were called to an address on Durham Street in Elswick at around 6.45pm on Friday after reports of concern for the pair.
The woman sustained a serious head injury and remains in critical condition, while the man suffered serious injuries but is in a stable condition. A cordon has been in place since Friday, and a forensic tent has been set up outside the property, with officers seen collecting evidence.
Northumbria Police initially arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of attempted murder and have since arrested seven others in connection with the investigation. All eight men remain in custody. Police are appealing for information, particularly from anyone who may have seen a red Renault Twingo believed to have been stolen and involved in the incident.
The vehicle is thought to have been parked in the West End of Newcastle between 6.30pm and 8pm on Friday and was later found in the Longbenton area on Saturday morning. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, the senior investigating officer, said: 'Eight suspects are now in custody being questioned, and I would like to reassure our communities extensive enquiries into this serious incident have already been carried out.'
He added: 'We would like to thank everyone who has already come forward, and as part of our investigation we are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the Renault Twingo. Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could prove vital to establishing exactly what happened that evening.'
Police have urged the public to avoid speculation and to provide information via the dedicated Major Incident Public Portal, by contacting Northumbria Police directly, or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number NP-20251121-0919.
