Man Arrested Following Edinburgh Stabbing Incident That Led to Tower Block Lockdown
Police Scotland have confirmed the arrest of a man in connection with a serious incident in the west of Edinburgh, where another man was stabbed with a bladed weapon. The event unfolded in the Calder area, prompting an extensive police response and significant disruption to the local community.
Tower Block Sealed Off and Schools Locked Down
The incident led to Cobbinshaw House, a tower block in Calder, being cordoned off for several hours as authorities dealt with the situation. Police initially advised members of the public to avoid the area entirely, later stating that the incident was "contained" but maintaining a visible presence.
Nearby schools and nurseries were placed into lockdown as a precautionary measure, though they were able to reopen once the immediate threat was resolved. Police have clarified that this was not a hostage situation and they received no reports of the suspect attempting to enter any childcare facilities.
Two People Injured in the Incident
Two individuals sustained injuries during the incident. A man suffered stab wounds but his injuries are described as non-life-threatening. A woman also received a laceration to her head; however, police believe this injury was not caused by a bladed weapon. Both patients were transported to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.
The Scottish Ambulance Service responded with significant resources, dispatching three ambulances, three paramedic response units, and a special operations response team to the scene on Calder Gardens after receiving an emergency call at 8.34am on Monday morning.
Police Response and Community Reassurance
Armed officers were deployed to the scene as part of the police operation. Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy addressed the public, stating: "I'd like to thank the public for their assistance and patience while we dealt with this incident. I understand what happened was alarming for the local community and I want to reassure the public there is no ongoing wider risk."
He encouraged anyone with remaining concerns to speak directly with officers at the scene or contact Police Scotland via the non-emergency number 101. The arrest followed reports of an individual in possession of a bladed weapon in the Calder area, with police acting swiftly to detain the suspect and secure the vicinity.
