Earl Spencer's Partner Settles Medical Privacy Claim Against Ex-Wife
Earl Spencer Partner Settles Claim Against Ex-Wife

Catrine Jarman, the partner of Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, has reached a High Court settlement with his ex-wife, Countess Karen Spencer, over the alleged misuse of her private medical information. The settlement was agreed in August last year, bringing an end to the legal dispute without any admission of liability or wrongdoing from Countess Spencer.

Background of the Claim

The claim, initially brought by Ms Jarman in 2024, alleged that Countess Spencer disclosed details of her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis to others without her consent. Ms Jarman expressed her delight at the resolution, stating she could now 'move on with my life.' She emphasised the fundamental right to medical privacy, which she felt had been violated.

Settlement Details

Countess Spencer did not attend the hearing, and her spokesperson confirmed that she accepted the settlement with no admission of liability. As part of the agreement, Earl Spencer contributed to Ms Jarman's legal costs and is also covering Countess Spencer's legal fees under a separate divorce agreement. Both Earl Spencer and Ms Jarman's separated husband, Tom Jarman, expressed regret over the disclosure of the medical information.

The case highlights the importance of medical confidentiality and the legal recourse available when such privacy is breached. Ms Jarman's decision to settle allows all parties to move forward without the burden of a prolonged court battle.
