Drivers Warned: Flip-Flops Could Lead to £100 Fine

Motorists have been warned that wearing flip-flops or other inappropriate footwear while driving could result in a £100 fine and three penalty points. Rule 97 of the Highway Code requires drivers to have footwear that does not prevent them from using the controls correctly.

Although there is no specific law banning flip-flops, drivers could be charged if their footwear restricts movement and leads to dangerous driving or an accident. An on-the-spot fine of £100 and three points on the licence may be issued in such cases.

Louise Thomas, a motor insurance expert at Confused.com, emphasised the importance of being aware of driving attire rules, especially as warmer weather encourages summer wardrobes. She noted that while jeans, skirts, and flip-flops are not explicitly banned, drivers must always ensure full control of their vehicle.

The RAC has issued guidelines for appropriate driving footwear, recommending shoes that provide adequate grip, do not impede pedal movement, and are not too bulky. Drivers are urged to check their footwear before setting off to avoid potential fines and safety risks.
