A delivery driver has admitted killing a young man after speeding at 60mph in a 40mph zone. Rosie Hanson, 21, was delivering a takeaway when her VW Golf struck 27-year-old Ryan Phillips on Marine Parade, Sheerness, Kent, on January 17, 2024. Mr Phillips was enjoying an evening walk with his girlfriend at the time.
Hanson, of Minster, initially pleaded not guilty to causing death by careless driving at Maidstone Crown Court in December but changed her plea on the day of the hearing. She also admitted a charge of causing death while uninsured, as her insurance may not have covered takeaway deliveries.
Prosecutor Tom Nicholson noted that Hanson was travelling at 60mph, 20mph over the limit, before losing control and colliding with Mr Phillips. Her lawyer Allan Goh stated that Hanson maintains an animal caused her to swerve, but the judge deemed this less significant given the excessive speed.
Judge Oliver Saxby KC granted Hanson bail with an interim driving ban and adjourned sentencing until July 2. A GoFundMe page described Mr Phillips as a 'kind, loving and caring young man' with a bright future.
